Pilgrimage of the Cross and the Icon

“Carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ’s love for humanity, and proclaim to everyone that it is only in Christ, who died and rose from the dead, that salvation and redemption are to be found”

Saint Pope John Paul II to young people in Rome, 22 April 1984

It all began on Palm Sunday of 2014 at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, when the youth of Brazil gave the Polish Youth the symbols of WYD, the Cross, and the icon of Our Lady Salus Populi Romani. This is when the pilgrimage of these symbols began in our country. The last time they were here was in 2010 thanks to the 25th anniversary of WYD. They visited 39 dioceses in Poland.

The pilgrimage of the symbols of WYD is one of the most important elements of preparing the country to host the World Youth Day. The symbols go on a pilgrimage from diocese to diocese, from city to city. They visit churches, prisons, schools, hospitals, etc. The youth and adults carry the cross and the icon through out the streets. They also venerate them by carrying them in their hands, kissing them with such a great devotion as if they were relics.

The symbols came directly from Rome to Poland on Monday April 14th 2014. They were brought there by young representatives from across the country, most of whom were from a delegation of Poznań, the first diocese to host the symbols of WYD. After visiting the Dioceses of Poznań, Kalisz, Włocław, and Warsaw - Siedlce Prague, the Cross and Icon have gone on a pilgrimage in our neighboring countries. Beginning June 29th, 2014, the pilgrimage went through Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The symbols returned to Poland on December 14th, 2014. They will stay here until World Youth Day. The pilgrimage around dioceses will end in Krakow. The Cross and Icon of Our Lady will be present during all main events, later they’ll go to other places, and finally they will arrive in the country that will host the next World Youth Day. And – we hope – so the tradition will continue forever.
